FAQ

Questions we are asked
before a booking

Straight answers on quotations, routing, the cold chain, customs, project cargo and port calls. If yours is not here, the operations team answers it directly.

Booking and quotations

How do I get a quotation?

Send the enquiry form with the origin, the destination, what you are moving and the dates that matter. An operations coordinator replies, usually the same working day, with the route, the scope and the price in writing before anything is booked.

What do you need from me to quote accurately?

For cargo: a commercial invoice or proforma, a packing list, dimensions and weights, the readiness date and the delivery island or address. For a vessel: the vessel name and IMO number, the ETA, the intended berth or anchorage and the services required. Each service page lists its document checklist.

Do you quote an all-in landed cost?

Yes. The quotation sets out the international leg, clearance, storage and the island delivery, so the number you approve is the number you pay unless the cargo or the route changes.

Is the route you quote the route you use?

Yes. We say whether a lane is direct or runs through a hub, and which hub, because a lane that pretends to be direct costs days you did not plan for.

Where can I read your trading conditions?

Request them through the contact form and the team sends the current copy.

Global freight forwarding

Which origins do you serve?

Singapore, Sri Lanka and India run direct to Malé. China, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia route through Singapore, and Thailand through Colombo. Through the group agent network we consolidate from more than 350 destinations worldwide, so ask about any origin not listed on the network page.

Do you handle full containers and part loads?

Both. FCL and LCL bookings, NVOCC and feeder services, and direct LCL consolidations from the hubs. Several suppliers in one country can be consolidated at origin into one shipment.

Do you offer air freight?

Yes, through a global airline network, including cargo air charter for outsize or urgent loads and sea-air combinations that pair sea freight economy with air freight speed. Air freight is the answer when the next sailing is too late.

Can you deliver beyond Malé?

Yes. The Atoll Container Express Service carries transit containers from Malé to the regional ports at Hithadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi, break bulk and unit cargo go to any island, and sea haulage runs from Malé to a project site.

What are the transit times?

Ranges rather than single figures, confirmed against the actual sailing or flight at booking. Ask for the schedule on the lane you need through the network page.

Is cargo insured?

Transport and marine cargo insurance can be arranged for any shipment. Tell your coordinator the cargo value when you book.

Temperature-controlled logistics

What can you move under temperature control?

Fresh produce, seafood, dairy, meat, frozen goods, fresh cut flowers, live plants, live animals, hatching eggs and pharmaceutical or controlled goods with narrow temperature bands.

How is the cold chain kept on the atoll leg?

The last leg is where most cold chains break. We run insulated or refrigerated transfer from Malé to your jetty and log the temperature to the point of delivery, so the chain is one chain rather than two halves.

What happens if reefer plug points at Malé are full?

Plug time is booked in advance against the vessel ETA, and a generator set is held on standby for any gap.

Do you have cold storage in Malé?

Yes. Bonded, chilled and frozen storage with shared or dedicated space, with pick and pack, deconsolidation and sorting by property before the island leg.

Which documents do perishables need?

A commercial invoice, a packing list with the temperature band per line, a health or veterinary certificate, a phytosanitary certificate for produce, a certificate of origin and a Maldives Food and Drug Authority import permit where applicable. We check them before the container is sealed at origin.

Do I get a temperature record?

Yes. Readings are logged hourly in transit and the temperature log is issued with proof of delivery. Any excursion is reported with claims support.

Customs brokerage

Are you a licensed customs broker?

Yes. Asia Shipping & Logistics is registered with Maldives Customs Service as a broker for DDU and DDP shipments and clears all types of imports and exports.

Which documents are needed for clearance?

A commercial invoice, a packing list, the bill of lading or air waybill, a certificate of origin, importer registration details and import permits for regulated goods. The entry is prepared from documents reviewed before the vessel or aircraft arrives.

Can you clear regulated goods?

Yes. Permits and licences are checked at the document review, and the team has experience across different commodities, including regulated goods.

How do you keep duty costs down?

Through accurate tariff classification and complete documentation, processed on IT-enabled systems, so entries are not held for queries and duty is assessed at the correct rate.

Do you offer import bond facilities?

Yes. Bonded storage lets goods wait in Malé with duty deferred until they are released.

Project cargo management

What counts as project cargo?

Heavy-lift, oversize and high-value consignments such as plant, vehicles, generators, prefabricated units and construction materials for a programme, moved as a planned operation rather than a standard booking.

How do you plan a movement?

With a feasibility study and route survey, multimodal transport recommendations, a proposal with alternatives and a time schedule, and liaison with public works and the authorities, including police escorts where needed.

Can you charter a vessel?

Yes. Charter and part charter, break bulk and heavy-lift shipments are arranged through our partnerships with breakbulk operators.

How is cargo landed at the island?

By landing craft and sea haulage from Malé to the site, followed by offloading and installation at the jobsite with the labour and equipment arranged for the lift.

How will I know where the cargo is?

Tracking and tracing, supervision of loading and transport, and status reporting against agreed KPIs run through the movement.

Vessel agency services

Which ports do you cover?

All Maldivian ports, with liner and ship agency for main line operators, common carriers, break bulk and multi-purpose vessel operators, and NVOCCs.

What do I send to appoint you as agent?

The vessel name and IMO number, the ETA, the intended berth or anchorage, the services required with quantities, the crew list and any crew change details, and the principal or charterer contact.

What can you supply to a vessel?

Fuel, lubricants and fresh water, provisions with fresh fruit and vegetables, ship stores and spare parts, safety equipment and life raft servicing, medical supplies, welding items and refills of oxygen, acetylene and Freon gases, at short notice.

Do you handle cruise ships and superyachts?

Yes. Customs and immigration clearance inbound and outbound, cruising permits, visas and extensions, crew and guest signing on and off with an airport representative, marina berthing and transport to the anchored vessel, provisioning, maintenance and repairs, and tours and travel arrangements.

How are port costs settled?

Through a disbursement account. The call is closed with the accounts reconciled and the receipts attached.

Working with ASL

Who will I deal with?

A named coordinator who knows your suppliers, your island and your stock cycle, and who answers for the outcome. The person who booked your container sits beside the person who can get to the vessel.

How will I be kept informed?

Each stage is confirmed as it happens. For the status of a shipment in progress, send a shipment update request with the booking reference.

Where is your office?

Omadu Fannu, Level-3, Malé, Maldives. Email docs@aslmaldives.com or call +960 334-3041.

Are you part of a larger group?

Yes. Asia Shipping & Logistics is part of the Asia Holdings Group, which has supported trade in the Maldives for over 21 years, reaches more than 2,400 cities through its agent network and has offices in Thailand, China, Malaysia, the UAE and India.

Can I see your licences and insurance?

Yes. Copies of the customs broker licence, the MPL registration and the cargo liability cover are available on request through the contact form.

What happens to the information I send?

It is stored to answer your enquiry and for no other purpose, and a copy goes to the operations team. The privacy page explains the details.
